(30+ hours salaried position)
Summary
To develop personal relationships with the Dreamers and their families and to help them deal with academic and personal issues or challenges
To assist in developing and maintaining a program of after-school, weekend, and summer activities aimed at meeting Dreamers’ academic and social needs.
To report and maintain consultative contact with the Program Director and with the Program Sponsors
To enlist, coordinate, and support the activities of volunteers.
To access and attract useful resources of community institutions, the school system, public agencies, and local businesses for the benefit of the I Have A Dream Program
Duties
Helping to plan and organize a year-round program of age-appropriate activities to support Dreamers’ academic needs including an after-school and summer program
Arranging a regular schedule of cultural, social, recreational, and community service activities
Providing individual Dreamer counseling and referrals to appropriate agencies and professionals; developing contacts with and utilizing social service agencies when needed.
Recognizing Dreamers’ needs and creating or accessing appropriate resources and programs to address those needs.
Promoting parental involvement in IHAD activities; conducting home visits; organizing parent activities, workshops, and discussion groups as needed.
Developing career awareness and job training activities for Dreamers; helping to create meaningful job and internship opportunities
Planning recognition events and holiday celebrations for Dreamers and their families
Organizing college campus visits and helping Dreamers access professional guidance in selecting colleges.
Maintaining contact with school officials; reviewing academic performance and attendance records of Dreamers; preparing regular status reports for Project Sponsor on the progress of each Dreamer
Recruiting, coordinating, and supervising volunteers
Keeping updated records such as Dreamers’ grades, school attendance, and IHAD participation.
Representing the Program to the public in community groups and forums
Managing program budgets, controlling disbursements for activities, and keeping financial records
Training and supervising Americorps members; submitting in-kind match and overall oversight of the Americorps member while at their site.
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree, preferable in education, social sciences, or a related discipline; equivalent experience in these fields is acceptable
All “I Have A Dream” employees must have strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, and creative initiative along with excellent character and leadership qualities. Because the Assistant Director will be working very closely with the Dreamers and their families, a strong commitment to the well-being of children and an understanding of the challenges facing low-income communities is essential. Familiarity with the Program’s community is also beneficial. An Assistant Director must be prepared to make a relatively long term commitment to the “I Have A Dream” Program.
